Pumpkin Pie Playdough

It's scary how fast the weekend flies by! Nick studied & I worked Friday night. While he was in class on Saturday, the kids & I hit Costco & the library. After naptime, it was off to do a little Christmas shopping. I got a few names crossed off & already know what I want to buy at the next show! Saturday night, Jessica & Kevin came over for dinner & Iron Man (fun show - yes, I know we are a bit behind on movie watching). Sunday, I made running group, Nick did the grocery shopping & the kids & I made pumpkin pie playdough before I headed out for a grown-up birthday party dinner.
My friend Heidi sent me this recipe (without a source). I let the kids measure their own ingredients & they tried (the kindergarteners) to do the stovetop stirring. Be careful because the dough is very hot coming off the stove. I made three batches so the kids could each participate (Ella had a friend over but Charlie & Greta shared a bowl). This recipe is heavy on salt so make sure you have enough before jumping in!

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup water
Food coloring (suggested 6 drops of red and 15 drops of yellow)

1. Combine the dry ingredients in a nonstick saucepan. Add the oil, water, and food coloring and whisk until smooth. Stirring constantly with a rubber spatula, cook the mixture over medium heat until it forms a ball, about 3 to 4 minutes.

2. Turn the dough onto a counter, let it cool slightly, then knead the dough until it has a smooth texture, about 1 minute. The dough will keep up to a week in a ziplock bag.

Look out Monday, here we come!
